This B-complex markets its methylated vitamins as easier for your body to use. But NIH’s own fact sheet on vitamin B12 says there’s no evidence that absorption differs by form at all — the real variable is dose. Here’s what the research actually shows about absorption, why this product’s vitamin B6 content lines up with an official safety limit, and why some people notice flushing after taking it.

How B Vitamin Absorption Actually Works — and What “Methylated” Really Means
“Methylated” B vitamins refer to forms your body doesn’t have to convert before using — methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin for B12, or L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) instead of folic acid for folate. The pitch is that skipping the conversion step means better absorption.
NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements addresses this directly for B12: “No evidence indicates that absorption rates of vitamin B12 in supplements vary by form of the vitamin.” Cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, hydroxycobalamin — none of them has been shown to absorb better than the others.
Folate tells an almost opposite story. NIH’s folate fact sheet notes that folic acid is about 85 percent bioavailable when taken with food, and close to 100 percent on an empty stomach — bioavailability so well established that it’s the basis for an entire official unit of measurement (dietary folate equivalents). The 5-MTHF form used in this product, on the other hand, doesn’t have that kind of official number yet: NIH states plainly that “factors for converting mcg DFE to mcg for supplemental folate in the form of 5-MTHF have not been formally established.” In other words, the form marketed as more advanced is the one without an official absorption figure to back it up.
So if form doesn’t decide absorption, what does?
The Real Variable Is Dose, Not Form
For vitamin B12 specifically, NIH data shows that absorption depends heavily on how much you take, not what form it’s in. At low doses — under 1 to 2 micrograms — your body absorbs around 50 percent, because a protein called intrinsic factor binds to B12 and shuttles it through the gut efficiently. Once a dose exceeds what intrinsic factor can handle, absorption switches to a much slower passive diffusion process. At 500 micrograms, absorption drops to about 2 percent. At 1,000 micrograms, it’s about 1.3 percent.
This product’s B12 dose — 300 micrograms of methylcobalamin per two capsules — falls well into that reduced-absorption range. That’s not a flaw specific to this brand; it’s true of essentially any B12 supplement dosed above a couple of micrograms, methylated or not. And because the RDA for B12 is only 2.4 micrograms a day for adults, even a 1 to 2 percent absorption rate at 300 micrograms still delivers several times the amount you actually need.
Absorption efficiency is one question. Whether the amounts in this product are even necessary — or safe — is another.

This Product’s Vitamin B6 Dose Hits the U.S. Safety Limit (and Exceeds Europe’s)
Two capsules of this product provide 100 milligrams of vitamin B6 — tens of times more than the RDA of 1.3 to 1.7 milligrams a day for adults. That number is worth pausing on, because the U.S. tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin B6 is also 100 milligrams a day for adults, counting food and supplements combined. This product’s labeled dose lines up exactly with that ceiling.
The UL exists because chronic use of 1 to 6 grams of pyridoxine a day for 12 to 40 months has been linked to sensory neuropathy — nerve damage that shows up as loss of coordination. The 100 mg figure itself comes with a safety margin built in: the Food and Nutrition Board halved a 200 mg/day dose that showed no harm in multi-year studies to land on the UL. High B6 intake from food alone hasn’t been reported to cause these effects; the concern is specifically about long-term, high-dose supplementation.
Notably, a 2023 scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority reassessed this question and landed somewhere very different: based on systematic reviews of peripheral neuropathy risk, EFSA set the upper limit for all adults, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, at just 12 milligrams a day. By that standard, this product’s 100 mg dose is more than eight times over the limit. The U.S. and European conclusions aren’t reconciled — it’s a real disagreement between health authorities about how conservative the ceiling should be, not a settled number either way.
Niacin tells a similar story, but with an important twist.
Why This Product Might Cause Niacin Flushing (and Why That’s Not Dangerous)
This product lists 100 milligrams of niacin per two-capsule dose, sourced from “niacinamide and niacin” — a blend of nicotinamide and nicotinic acid in an unspecified ratio the label doesn’t break down. That total sits well above the U.S. UL for supplemental niacin, which is 35 milligrams a day for adults — about 2.9 times over.
But the two forms in that blend behave very differently. Nicotinic acid causes flushing — reddening, burning, and tingling skin — starting around 30 to 50 milligrams, which is likely what’s behind the flushing some reviewers of this product report. It’s an unpleasant reaction, but NIH describes it as transient rather than toxic, and it tends to fade with food or as the body adjusts. Nicotinamide, the other form in this blend, doesn’t cause flushing at all, and its side effects don’t start showing up until doses reach around 3,000 milligrams a day.
The genuinely serious risks from niacin — liver enzyme elevation, blood sugar increases, in rare cases acute liver failure — are documented at 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day, taken for months or years, usually in the context of using niacin as a cholesterol-lowering treatment under medical supervision. This product’s 100 mg dose is nowhere near that range. Exceeding the UL here is real, but it’s several orders of magnitude away from the doses associated with serious harm.
The Bottom Line
The claim that methylated B vitamins absorb better than standard forms isn’t something NIH’s own data backs up — for B12, the agency states outright that form doesn’t affect absorption, and for folate, the form marketed as more advanced doesn’t even have an official bioavailability figure yet. What actually determines how much B12 you absorb is dose, and higher doses absorb progressively less efficiently regardless of form.
Where this product does deserve a closer look is B6 and niacin. The B6 dose lines up exactly with the U.S. safety ceiling and sits well past Europe’s more conservative one, while the niacin dose is almost three times the U.S. upper limit — though the flushing that can come with it is uncomfortable rather than dangerous at this level.
“Methylated” might be a fair reason to pick a B-complex like this one over a cheaper alternative for other reasons — but “better absorbed” isn’t one NIH’s own data backs up.
