ALOHA Protein Bar: What the “5g Sugar” Label Means

The listing for ALOHA Organic Plant Based Protein Bars in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough advertises “14g Plant-Based Protein, 10g Fiber, 5g Sugar” right in the title. Those are real numbers from the label, but a protein bar label has more to read than the headline. This post goes through the Nutrition Facts panel and turns the grams into percent of FDA Daily Value so you can see what one bar actually contributes.

What the label lists for one bar

One bar weighs 56 g, and a box has 12. The Nutrition Facts panel on the Amazon listing shows 240 calories, 11 g of fat (2.5 g saturated, no trans fat), 105 mg of sodium, 25 g of carbohydrate, 10 g of dietary fiber, 5 g of total sugars including 4 g of added sugars, and 14 g of protein. When I checked on Oct. 21, the 12-count box was $22.78, about $1.90 per bar, though Amazon prices change often.

Turning grams into percent of Daily Value

The FDA’s Daily Values are 28 g for fiber, 50 g for protein, 50 g for added sugars, 20 g for saturated fat, 78 g for fat, and 2,300 mg for sodium. Using those, one bar works out to about 36% of the fiber DV, 28% of the protein DV, 14% of the fat DV, 13% of the saturated fat DV, 8% of the added sugar DV, and 5% of the sodium DV. The FDA treats 5% DV or less as low and 20% or more as high, so by that rule the bar is high in fiber and protein, low in sodium, and in between for added sugars. The 240 calories are about 12% of a 2,000-calorie day.

“5g sugar” and the 4 g of added sugar

“5g Sugar” in the title is accurate, but it describes total sugars. The FDA explains that total sugars include naturally occurring sugars as well as added sugars, and that added sugars include sugars from syrups. On this panel, 4 of the 5 grams are listed as added.

The ingredient list shows where added sugar can come from: tapioca syrup, cane sugar inside the chocolate chips, brown sugar, and brown rice syrup. The label does not say how much each one contributes, so you cannot tell the split from the packaging alone. For comparison, our post on how much sugar is in each Dunkin’ Halloween drink uses the same 50 g Daily Value, and a single bar sits far below the large drinks in that list.

What the ingredient list tells you

The protein comes from a blend of brown rice protein and pumpkin seed protein, and the ingredient list also includes sunflower seed butter, tapioca fiber, cocoa nibs, brown rice crisps, and sea salt. Nearly every ingredient in the list carries an organic marker; sea salt does not. Amazon’s AI-generated summary of customer reviews says shoppers like the taste and ingredients, find the texture chewy, and disagree about whether the price is worth it. I did not find independent testing of the label numbers, so everything above comes from the label itself.

Who might read this label differently

A bar with 10 g of fiber and 14 g of protein can be a convenient snack, while 4 g of added sugar and 240 calories may matter more if you are tracking either one. Daily Values are based on a 2,000-calorie diet, and your needs may differ, so people with a medical condition or a specific nutrition plan should check with a doctor or dietitian.

The bottom line

The headline numbers are accurate, and the rest of the panel adds context: fiber and protein are high by FDA’s 20% rule, sodium is low, and most of the 5 g of sugar is added.
