McDonald’s Monopoly 2026 Odds: What a Game Piece Is Worth

McDonald’s says your odds of winning at Monopoly are 1 in 5. Read the official rules and you’ll find that about 95% of those wins are food worth between $1.49 and $5.19, while the prizes that make the headlines sit at odds of hundreds of millions, or billions, to one. Here’s what the 2026 game’s rules actually say, what a single game piece is worth on average, and the details that are easy to miss.

What the “1 in 5” Number Actually Covers

The game runs from October 6 through November 1, 2026. According to the official rules, McDonald’s plans to distribute about 640,591,900 game pieces, and the overall odds of winning an instant-win prize, “mostly food,” are 1 in 5 at the start of the game. That number counts every instant-win food and loyalty-point prize. It does not include the large Collect to Win prizes or the separate Chance Card Game.

The rules list eight food prizes. The most common is an apple pie or small fries, at about 1 in 25. Next come a vanilla cone or small fries (1 in 32), a McGriddles sandwich (1 in 38), a McChicken or double cheeseburger (1 in 42), and a small drink or coffee (1 in 46). The rarest food prize, two cookies or a mini McFlurry, is about 1 in 98. MyMcDonald’s Rewards points are rarer still: roughly 1 in 104 overall, and 1 in 1,660 for each of the larger 3,500, 5,000, and 7,000-point prizes.

What a Game Piece Is Worth: Our Math

Adding up the prize counts in the rules, there are about 122.5 million instant-win food prizes and 6.2 million points prizes. That is roughly 128.6 million winners out of 640.6 million pieces, which matches the 1-in-5 figure. It also means food makes up about 95% of instant wins.

The rules give each food prize an approximate retail value (ARV) between $1.49 and $5.19. Multiplying the prize counts by those values, and counting points prizes at their maximum stated value, gives our own estimate of roughly 54 to 63 cents per game piece. That is our calculation from McDonald’s published numbers, not a figure McDonald’s states.

Treat it as a rough guide. McDonald’s sets the retail values from August 2026 average prices, points are worth “up to” their listed amounts depending on how you redeem them, and the number leaves out the Chance Card Game and Collect to Win prizes. A prize is also only worth something if you use it. Still, it puts “1 in 5” in perspective: the typical win is a small item, not a jackpot.

The Big Prizes and Their Odds

The top Collect to Win prizes require specific sets of property pieces, and the rules put the odds of completing each set at very long. The 2027 Jeep Cherokee, with 5 available, is about 1 in 22.7 billion. A Carnival cruise package (50 available) is about 1 in 188 million. A $500 Circle K gas card (760 available) is about 1 in 149 million. The $100,000 prizes range from about 1 in 56.7 billion to 1 in 530 billion.

The Chance Card Game works differently. Its odds depend on the time you play in the app, and prizes are seeded more heavily when activity is expected to be higher. The rules include one $10,000 cash prize for each day of the game. According to McDonald’s announcement, the $1 million prize is paid as $50,000 a year for 20 years, without interest. The rules also say the number of prizes and your odds change as prizes are claimed.

Rules That Trip People Up

Playing requires the McDonald’s app, an opt-in to MyMcDonald’s Rewards, and a registration for the game. The rules say to complete all of this before you order if you want the bonus Chance Card Game play that comes with each eligible item you buy. You can only play through the app. Pieces are stuck to packaging, you scan them, and you can enter up to eight game codes and play the Chance Card Game up to eight times a day, based on Eastern Time.

Only certain items come with a piece. The list includes large hot and cold drinks, large fries, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, the Big Mac, 10-piece McNuggets, 4-piece McCrispy Strips, hash browns, biscuit sandwiches, and McMuffin sandwiches. Limited-time and seasonal items are excluded, and the packaging runs out when supplies do. If you’re comparing breakfast options, we looked at how three chains’ breakfast menus stack up.

No purchase is necessary. You can request one game piece by mail, with a self-addressed, stamped envelope sent in an outer envelope that must arrive by November 2. A few dates matter: purchases for pieces end November 1, Chance Card Game play ends November 8, and prizes must be claimed in the app by November 22, 2026.

The Bottom Line

“1 in 5” is accurate, but it describes mostly small food prizes. By the rules’ own numbers, an average game piece is worth well under a dollar, and the big prizes are long shots. If you play, do it for the fun, register in the app before you order, and mark November 22 on your calendar if you win something.
